China and India have wisdom to ‘help each other succeed’: spokesperson
BEIJING: China and India have the wisdom and ability to “help each other succeed instead of undercutting each other,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin on Friday when asked about Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s remarks on India and China working together for an Asian century at a regular press briefing.
An Asian century will happen when China and India come together, but an Asian century will be difficult if India and China can’t come together, Jaishankar said on Thursday.
“As a Chinese leader put it, ‘unless China and India are developed, there will be no Asian century. No genuine Asia-Pacific century or Asian century can come until China, India and other neighbouring countries are developed,'” Wang said.
Noting that China and India are ancient civilizations, emerging economies and neighboring countries, he said the two countries’ common interests far outweigh their differences.
“Both sides have the wisdom and capability to help each other succeed instead of undercutting each other,” said Wang.
The leaders of the two countries have reached an important consensus that China and India should cooperate rather than be threats to each other, and are also an opportunity for each other’s development.
Wang urged the Indian side to work together with China in the same direction to implement this consensus and return bilateral relations to stable and healthy development.
